How long is a year?

The Earth completes one complete circuit around the Sun in about a year. Unfortunately, the Earth doesn’t reach its final destination in a whole number of days.

The length of a year is 365.25 days. Since our calendars don’t have quarter days, we add an extra day every four years. So over four years, the math works out. To keep the calendar and reality aligned, leap seconds are also added from time to time.

An average year has 31,557,600 seconds (86,400 multiplied by 365.25), since there are 86,400 seconds in a day.
